Hiking the Pondo Trail with Angela Blakwell and Guide Dog Jaydee

A woman sitting on a large piece of driftwood on a sandy riverbank beside a white dog. The woman has short brown hair and light skin, and she is wearing a light gray T-shirt and denim shorts, barefoot, resting her chin on her hand and facing to the right with a calm, thoughtful expression. The dog is sitting close to her left side, wearing a collar, and also facing to the right. A wide, calm river stretches behind them, with green, tree-covered hills on both sides and a pale sky with light clouds.

How do you think a blind woman and her guide dog would experience a four-day hike along the beautiful coastline of South Africa?

That’s the story I’m sharing in my latest podcast episode, Paws on the Path – Hiking the. Pondo Trail with Angela Blackwell and Guide Dog Jaydee.

What I love about this episode is the way that Angela pulls us into the story of her increasing blindness, the impact that being partnered with Jaydee had on her life, and how she came up with the idea of them hiking the Pondo Trail.

Angela describes her relationship with Jaydee so beautifully during our interview. I think she manages to capture how most of us feel about the freedom we are gifted by these gorgeous dogs, and the independence they give us. Her words are such a beautiful testimony to what it’s like working with a guide dog.

Of course, I’m also absolutely behind Angela’s initiative to raise funds to further the amazing work being done by the South African Guide Dogs Association for the Blind. It is great to see how those who hear her story are supporting what she’s doing through her Back-a-Buddy campaign.

Listening to Angela tell the story of what it was like for her and Jaydee to walk the trail took me right into her experience. I hope it will do the same for you when you listen to our conversation.

This episode has to rank as one of my favourites and I’m so glad I had the opportunity to share it with my community, including yourself.
