There is so much confusion in society about what disability is and is not. It is easy to find a dictionary definition of disability, and most countries have their own specific definition, or use that developed by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Where the confusion arises is in the understanding of the definitions as a theoretical concept, and the reality of living with a disability.
My friend and podcast guest, Ghofran Alyass has put together an online course on disability and has decided to include it as an offering on the Beyond Abilities International website as a resource for the public. It may be the perfect tool for you to discover answers to the questions you may have about disability, the concepts and the reality.
Ghofran shared the course information with me and I’ve included it below and, if you are interested in learning more, you can sign up for the course at https://payhip.com/BeyondAbilitiesInternational
Here is the description of the course:
Disability is a term that, in reality, should be defined in diverse ways. Still, when we are asked to determine disability, we move towards pathologized definitions guided by the medical model, which defines disability as an illness to be cured or a problem to be solved. In this course, we will unpack and dismantle these ableist definitions and move towards redefining disability in contexts of everyday life, education, and multiple other settings, keeping in mind that disability is an individual experience.
Who is this Course for?
This course is for individuals who already have a background or knowledge of disability and those who wish to learn about disability either to enhance their knowledge or to benefit them in their professional lives or their lives as caregivers of family members of disabled individuals. Finally, this course is also suitable for those who will be learning about disability for the first time, as this course will present practical knowledge of disability with real-world examples.
There is a 10% discount valid until 31 August 2024.
The course is already live on the Beyond Abilities International website, and you will receive a certificate of completion once you have done the course.
