Paws for Thought: Share the Excitement of An Unboxing

One of my favourite moments as an author is taking ownership of the very first print run of a newly published book. There is simply something magic about holding a copy of the book for the first time.

For a sighted author , seeing the printed book and the cover for the first time must be a huge part of the excitement. As a blind author, I might not be able to enjoy that aspect, but there are still many ways in which I get to share in the experience and glee. Through my other senses I get to discover what the book feels like, what it smells like, and to experience the sheer luxury of simply fanning through the pages for the first time.

I recently experienced that feeling when I received the box of the second edition of Fiji’s book, Paws for Thought: Seeing the World Through the Eyes of a Guide Dog. And it was as much magic as it always is.

But why not discover a glimpse of that for yourself?

This time, I decided to capture a video of my revelling in the sensations. That’s what you’ll experience if you click on the link below.

You’ll see my excitement as I (eventually) manage to open the box with a craft knife, remove the packaging and draw out the first pack of books.

Here’s where you can see the video:
